Flamenco in Madrid

Yesterday May 12 we had reservations for the premier Flamenco house in Madrid (Corral de la Moreria).  Never having been a fan of dance, I was a little concerned that this could be a bust.  An cheesy performance for the  tourist market.   To my surprise the whole evening was a really pleasant surprise.  It was dinner and a show.  Starting out the food was really quite good.  I had the rack of lamb, Linda the salmon.  Nice bottle of Marques de Riscal.  Had a really nice conversation with the Australian couple sitting next to us.  It was pretty tight quarters and you can't help overhearing the other table conversation.  Sitting next to them were two young ladies from La Mesa.  We had a nice conversation.

I was so surprised at how much I enjoyed the performance. I have never been a fan of dance.  We were not allowed to take pictures except for the first 5 minute of the performance but none of these turned out very well.  The images below are from google images, but it gives you a good idea.  I know nearly nothing about the art form.  To my ear the singing seems to have a strong Moorish influence.  The themes seem to be full of angst and melancholy, very reminiscent of Opera.  The whole thing knitted together with only voice, guitar, clapping and sound of their heels on the dance floor.

The 2 guitarists were incredible.  I could have listened to them all night.  The percussive clapping, the sounds of heals on the dance floor and the syncapated rythms were entrancing.  It was so much fun. Who knew? Whats next, ballet? Don't get your hopes up.
