Botin - The Oldest Resturant In the World
Botin, the oldest restaurant in the world. Open since 1725, before the US was even a country. The famous Spanish painter Goya worked there as a waiter. It was Friday May 13 and we had a reservation for lunch on the following day. We were right in the area so we though that we would check to see if we could get a table for lunch. To my surprise they pointed us through part of the kitchen at a old narrow staircase. We walked down the narrow winding staircase trying not to bang your head to the basement dinning room which was two old vaulted ceiling room side by side. Unbelievable atmosphere. Roast suckling pig is the dish that they have been making here for hundreds of years and are dully famous for. Had to have this. On our way through the initial door to the restaurant there was a big bowl of giant white asparagus. Had to have this too. Linda ordered the gazpacho and roast chicken. Ordered a nice bottle of Muga tempranillo that we had a few days prior when we were in Haro. The food started coming and everything was great. The suckling pig was exceptional. The best ever. Crispy crunchy skin that is like pig foie gras. I'm in piggy heaven. It also comes with some of the cooking broth that is a perfect sauce for both the piggy and the perfectly roasted potatoes that comes with. Linda's roast chicken was also perfectly cooked. A great lunch at the oldest restaurant in the world.
