Driving in Sicilia
After leaving the Una Hotel we took a cab to the airport and
picked up a rental car to begin our driving tour of Sicilia. Driving in Sicilia is not something for people
with nervous dispositions. The pace is
fast but it seems like the goal for everyone is not to stop. Keep moving at all costs. It looks like chaos but there seems to be a
dance to it. There are very few stop
signs or stop lights. When two cars
arrive at an intersection the most aggressive and sure footed goes first. Intersections are more like merge lanes on the
freeway back in California . If you hesitate, you cause problem. Just keep moving. Don’t stop. Generally people are pretty good natured
about the whole driving thing. Not much
yelling or extraneous hand gesturing, especially for a culture that is know for talking with their hands. Amazingly I’m
getting use to it and it almost seems normal.
Then there’s the motorcycles and vespas.
I think you mostly ignore them.
They are like flys. They fend for
themselves. They go everywhere and fit
between any cracks in the traffic whether that’s autos or pedestrians. I have never seen a crash or people hit by
them. It's disturbing when you first see it but you get use to it.
