The best
Our good friend Georgi (a former New Yorker), is often heard to say, that was "the best" when it comes culinary complements. We always get a laugh about it when she does this but now I understand where it comes from. New Yorkers seem to have this somewhat inflated view of their world like, they keep all the good stuff for themselves and the rest of the world get's their table scraps. Don't get me wrong, in many respects it's a well deserved ego trip. As far as food goes, it really is kind of the big leagues. However I have really noticed it being here. Just in the few day's I've been here I've see it a number of times. There's a place near here called "Beard Papas", that clams to have "the best" cream puff in the world. OK in the first place I'm surprised that a place can survive selling only cream puff's, in the second place I'll take that dare. OK they were pretty damn good, but the "the best" cream puff in the world, I'm not so sure that some of the best pastry chef's in France might want a rematch. I wish we had a "Beard Papas" in San Deigo.
On Sunday we are headed off to breakfast and I see a line out in front of a nearby bakery (Levain Bakery). Now I had read about this place and new it was pretty good but whenever a line forms infront of an eating establishment, especialy in New York that trumps all the Zagats or Michelin stars that they could get. So I get to the back of the line and ask the guy in front of me, "So what does this place do that everyone is standing line for?" He turns to me and before he can say anything the woman in front of him blurts out "It's the best cookie you've ever eaten". Well OK then, them's fighting words in my book, now I'm really in line. That's a pretty bold statement. The line moved pretty quickly and I get my chocolate chip walnut cookies home. This thing was more like a scone than a cookie. Was it the best cookie you've ever eaten, don't think so but it was a fantastic cookie with tons of chocolate chips and walnuts in it. I think we ate breakfast on those two cookies for three day's. I wish we had a Levain Bakery in San Diego
