Luminaria Festival Lucca
September 13th - Lucca
This was one of the local festivals that we planned our trip around. It was interesting to see something that the locals are doing for themselves and not as a tourist performance like the nightly Puccini concerts. Unfortunately the Festival happened to fall on the only bad night of weather that we had in Lucca. A steady light rain the entire evening dampened the drama of this festiv. They start out at a church at one end of town and finish at the big cathedral in Lucca. All the locals turned out. You could tell them because they were the ones that were dress up in suits and ties and women dress to the nine's. All of the parishes send their people to march. They told us that it takes 4 hours for the entire procession to make it's way from the begining church to where the main church in Lucca. We watched about 1 1/2 hrs of rain soaking and then opted for dinner. Its a difficult thing to get photos of this festival, at night all candle lite. Many of the building on the route were all lit up with individual candels that worker lite just before dark. I've posted a few of them here just to give you a taste, but they really did not come out very good. We stood near the Church of St. Michelle that was all lite up from burning pots of oil. It was something to see. The photos don't do it justice.
